History of the Boulder County Latina League
The Latina League was founded as a 501(c)3 organization in 1999 after a group of local, professional Latina women discovered a major need existed in our community for scholarship assistance to competent, but financially needy, Latino students graduating from Boulder County area high schools.
Originally, scholarships were awarded exclusively to Latina girls but in 2008, Latino boys were also awarded scholarships. The League’s two major events include the annual scholarship ceremony that awardees, their families, friends, community members, mentors and school officials attend. In 2012, we held our first signature fundraiser event, “Fiesta de Mayo” whose success has inspired us to continue this event.
In April 2012, the League formed a partnership with Impact on Education to work together on our scholarship program, using the greater visibility to build a more solid foundation for the future. Impact on Education will manage our scholarship program by preparing donor letters, sending checks to students’ respective schools and tax preparation.
The League started off the new year (2013) on a high note by forming a new partnership with the Daily Camera. This, too, will increase our visibility in our community and we look forward to working with them.
Since the League’s beginning, over 230 scholarships have been awarded totaling over $192,ooo. Moreover, students attending the University of Colorado have received matching scholarships from CU.
